Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

Root canal treatment is often perceived as a painful procedure, which leads many patients to postpone it. However, thanks to modern endodontic techniques, root canal therapy can usually be completed comfortably and with minimal discomfort in one or two sessions. With proper local anesthesia, patients do not feel pain during the procedure; any discomfort that occurs is typically caused by an existing infection. The primary goal of root canal treatment is to eliminate the pain affecting the patient’s daily life and restore the tooth to a healthy state.

The process begins by fully numbing the tooth and surrounding tissues. A typical session lasts about 45 minutes. Delaying treatment may allow the infection to spread to the root tip, leading to bone loss or tooth loss. For this reason, timely intervention is extremely important.

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is performed when the soft tissue inside the tooth—called the pulp—becomes damaged or infected. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When a tooth cracks, suffers trauma, or develops deep decay, bacteria can enter the pulp chamber and multiply. If left untreated, this may lead to severe pain, abscess formation, infection, and ultimately tooth loss.

The purpose of root canal treatment is to remove the infected pulp, disinfect the canals, and preserve the natural tooth. This helps protect the surrounding bone structure and prevents further complications.

When Is Root Canal Treatment Necessary?

You may need a root canal treatment if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Swelling in the face or neck

  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold foods

  • Pain when chewing or biting

  • Gum abscess or pimple-like swelling

  • Cracked or fractured tooth

  • Deep cavities

  • Gum swelling or discoloration

  • Radiating or persistent tooth pain

Early diagnosis is key to saving the tooth and preventing bone damage.

How Is Root Canal Treatment Performed?

Root canal therapy consists of several steps designed to thoroughly clean and restore the tooth:

  1. X-ray Evaluation
The dentist takes an X-ray to examine the root structure and assess the extent of infection.

  2. Local Anesthesia
The area is numbed to ensure a comfortable and pain-free procedure.

  3. Removal of the Damaged Pulp
The infected pulp tissue is carefully removed, eliminating the source of pain.

  4. Cleaning and Shaping the Canals
Special endodontic instruments are used to shape and disinfect the root canals.

  5. Temporary or Permanent Filling
Depending on the severity of the infection, the canals may be filled in the same session or a few days later. A temporary filling is often placed initially.
The canals are then sealed with gutta-percha, a biocompatible material that prevents contamination.

  6. Final Restoration
After healing, the tooth is completed with a permanent filling or a crown to restore full function and durability.

Aftercare Following Root Canal Treatment

  • Mild sensitivity for a few days is normal and can be managed with prescribed pain relievers.

  • Avoid eating for at least three hours after the procedure.

  • Brush twice daily and use dental floss once a day to maintain oral hygiene.

  • Limit sugary and sticky foods that may promote decay.

  • Schedule routine dental check-ups at least twice a year.

When performed properly, root canal treatment has a very high success rate, and the treated tooth can remain functional for a lifetime with regular care.
