Dental Implant Treatment

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots placed into the jawbone to restore the function and aesthetics of missing teeth. Made from titanium, these roots are long-lasting and closely mimic natural teeth, making implants one of the most effective modern solutions for tooth loss. By placing fixed or removable prostheses onto the implants, chewing comfort increases, aesthetics improve, and speech returns to its natural state.

Dental implants can be used for a single missing tooth or multiple tooth loss. Bone quality, bone volume, and gum health play a major role in the success of the treatment.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is an artificial, titanium structure that functions as the root of a lost tooth. After being placed into the jawbone, it integrates with the bone (osseointegration) to form a strong foundation. A crown or prosthesis is then placed on top, restoring both function and appearance. Acting like a natural tooth root, it ensures that prostheses remain stable and secure.

What Is Implant Treatment?

Implant treatment is a modern procedure that replaces missing teeth using artificial roots placed into the jawbone. Fixed or removable prostheses attached to the implants provide comfort and functionality very similar to natural teeth. With proper care, implants can last for many years, even a lifetime.

When Is Implant Treatment Preferred?

  • In complete tooth loss, implant-supported prostheses can be used to improve retention.

  • In cases of missing molars, fixed bridges can be preferred over removable dentures.

  • For long edentulous gaps, implants help create a stronger and more stable bridge.

  • For single-tooth loss, implants provide a natural look and function without needing to trim adjacent teeth.

What Should Be Considered Before Getting an Implant?

  • The jawbone must have adequate height and width to support the implant.

  • Bone density and quality significantly affect treatment success.

  • Gum health must be fully stabilized before implant placement.

  • Implant planning should never be done without clinical and radiological examination.

  • There is no upper age limit if overall health and bone quality are suitable.

  • Implants are not recommended for very young patients whose bone development is incomplete.

  • During healing (3–6 months), excessive pressure on the implant must be avoided.

  • Smoking may negatively affect healing and increase the risk of infection.

  • Good oral hygiene and regular check-ups greatly extend the lifespan of implants.

Implants are made from biocompatible materials such as titanium, and the risk of rejection is extremely low. The experience and expertise of the dentist play a crucial role in successful outcomes.

How Is an Implant Applied? – 5-Step Treatment Process

1. Examination & Planning

General health, bone structure, and gum condition are assessed. Necessary X-rays are taken, and the appropriate implant type is selected.

2. Implant Placement

Under local anesthesia, the implant is placed in the jawbone painlessly. The procedure takes 30–90 minutes depending on the number of implants.

3. Healing Period

The implant is left to integrate with the bone for about 3–6 months. A temporary prosthesis may be provided during this stage. Follow-up visits are scheduled regularly.

4. Abutment Placement

Once integration is complete, the abutment (the piece that supports the prosthesis) is attached to the implant.

5. Prosthesis Fabrication

Impressions are taken, and a custom-made crown or prosthesis is placed on the implant.

At the end of this process, the patient achieves results that look and function almost exactly like natural teeth.
